Festival commemorating St Brigid to open in Co Louth

A festival to commemorate the life of St Brigid will begin in Co Louth later today.

The Brigid 1500 festival will mark 1,500 years since her death and celebrate her life and legacy.

Known locally as St Brigid of Faughart, Ireland's female patron saint is said to have been born in Faughart, north of Dundalk.

The events will kick off with an art exhibition, with pieces created by artists Susan Farrelly, Úna Curley, Claire McAteer and Etaoin O'Reilly.

The exhibition at 4-5 Clanbrassil Street in Dundalk will also include St Brigid's cloak, which was created by the students of St Brigid's School in Árd Easmuinn and will be open to the public for ten days.

The County Museum in Dundalk will also host a St Brigid of Ireland exhibition honouring the life and accomplishments of the local saint.

Louth County Council said it will "explore her connections to both Pagan and Christian traditions and runs from the 26 January to 29 February".

Next week, Dundalk will be illuminated by a multisensory light show paying homage to Brigid of Faughart each evening from Wednesday 31 January until 5 February.

The light display will be choreographed to music, incorporating, historical, cultural and spiritual elements.

The Northern Lights Brigid 1500 show will then run every weekend in February.

The event schedule will also see a newly devised theatre show at An Táin Arts Centre on St Brigid's Day the 1 February and the 2 February as well.

"Brigid: Lady of Light" is billed as recounting her compelling story from birth in Faughart, to her legacy in Kildare.
