Cardinal Marx: Baptism is the key to orientation in the world

Cardinal Reinhard Marx has emphasised the relevance of baptism for young people in an increasingly confusing world.

"Baptism is the key to orientation in the world," said the Archbishop of Munich and Freising at a church service in Munich on Saturday.

Most people do not remember their baptism.

However, it is particularly important for young people who are looking for guidance not to lose sight of the significance of this event.

"We all need a key to understand this confusing world and not be weighed down by the many events and information of the modern world," emphasised Marx.

With baptism, heaven opens up and we see a different dimension of possibilities and new horizons, said the Cardinal.

On the one hand, this is that "God does not abandon us and is the Father of all people", that Christ is at people's side and that "we believe in a creative force that works in the world, that takes us further and that we can join".

From this perspective, it is possible to gain the certainty and conviction to face this world and see it from a different perspective.

Marx made his comments at a meeting with participants from Munich at last year's World Youth Day in Lisbon

More than 400 young people from the archdiocese also took part in the event in the Portuguese capital.

At the follow-up meeting on Saturday in the Youth Church in the Church Centre in Munich, the young people had the opportunity to tell the Cardinal about their pilgrimage and celebrate Mass together.
